Spooky!

Initially, I was going to call this new anthology horror comic for HBC "Doorway to Midnight", but in the end, I opted for a simpler, one-word title, which is more in the vein of those great B&W horror comics magazines of the 60's and 70's.

So here is the result in clean pencils...

... and in blood-spattered color:

  1. She's georgeous as usual, but the room is really frightening!
It's just me or you are into darker themes lately?
Well, if you continue creating those perfect women, the background can be as terrifying as you want.

  2. Anboto,

My goal for this cover was to portray an innocent/vulnerable looking girl in the midst of a very creepy environment. So I guess, at least in your eyes, that I succeeded. ;)

I'm not sure if I'm going towards more terrifying themes in all of my work, but for this new comic book project, I definitely wanted it to be more horrific and scary than Carnal Tales, which is why I came up with a new concept as opposed to simply continuing the CT series.

    Thanks.

  3. Hey James,
Mart here. I'm new to this blogger thing. Actually became interested by finding it through your blog here. So I got myself up and running as well. As far as Spooky..."Spooky Spectacular"!!!

I really enjoyed checking out your works. Haven't made it all the way through yet. I'm in an area that has a really slow connection.

Your style is very compelling. You bring a 2-D pencil to life with a touch of 3-D colors and shading. It works really well.

Now let me get back to checking out more stuff you have. I'm an amateur artist and have been working on getting my site back into shape after a long neglect. Surfing your pages while I take a break on the daunting task of slow uploads...lol.

  4. Hey, Mart.

    Thanks for the comments.

I checked out your site and I'm impressed. Your digital painting technique is really good. I didn't have time to view all of your pieces, but the vampire one sure caught my eye!

    Good stuff!

    - James.

P.S.: If you're still wondering, the hot babe leaning against the old Cola machine is Jaime Pressly, back in the days when she was a Playboy Playmate.

  5. James!!!

    Your Da Man! "Jaime Pressly"

Just for that I'm giving you a Special link from site to yours here!!! I knew if I asked politely, someone would know who she is. Ask a pro and you get the right answers.

Of course, no body actually goes to my site...lol. But I'm working on that link now from my main page. It is the least I can do, thanks...many times over.

  6. Glad I could be of help.

I've already added a link to your site in my links section (left column.) Hopefully, that'll generate some traffic for you.

    Thanks,

  9. Dude,

Hmmm, let's see, what have you given us this time: a straight jacket that leaves all the right parts free; an art deco hypodermic syringe; chains; platforms; a ball gag and whip; a creepy, eyeless, dismembered baby doll; and the usual luscious babe, in dire peril.

Allow me to summarize: you ROCK!

    Cheers,

    Dennis

  10. Oh no!! sorry about that, too sleepy... the dismembered doll gives me the creeps, but that doesn't change the fact that is a masterpiece, as usual!!

  11. Dennis: What's kind of cool, too, is that all the elements shown on the cover are significant to the story.

    Thanks for the comments!

Elisa: No problem. Glad you still like the cover despite the creepy doll. :)

    Thanks,
    - James.

P.S. Am I the only girl leaving comments?

  14. Jesús: Thanks, man! :)

I had a lot of fun with this cover. I especially like the creepy setting... and the girl turned out not too bad either. ;)

Elisa: As far as I know, there was only one other girl who left a comment so far.

By the way, I'm assuming you subscribe to HBC, right? How else would you have known the doll head speaks? ;)

    Thanks,
    - James.

  15. Yeap, HBC & SBC :) I shouldn't be surprised by your attention to detail, but I am, like Dennis said: You ROCK!!!

  16. Cool!

Creature Busters was an interesting concept. I may bring back Bunny & Hyde at some point in the future.

    We'll see...

  18. James, Mart here again. Not meaning to bog you down with questions on this comment section...it is intended for your art...not for me to chat with you. So how do I contact you another way? Got an update on my blog and wanted to get you in a critique situation.

  19. Mart,

Feel free to post comments, questions or links to the work in question that you'd like me to look at in the comments section... It's no problem at all.

Just remember that even though I'll give you my honest opinion, I'm in no way an art critic. ;)

    Thanks,
    - James.

  22. Mart: Just left a comment on your blog. :)

Elisa: Yes, Stacey's back in her last chapter of issue number one. Unfortunately, there was a snafu and the uncorrected version of the episode was uploaded on SBC. It's been corrected now, so the story flows a little better. You may want to check it out again.

Stacey will return in issue 2 in a month from now with a new adventure which begins where issue 1 left off... Space pirates galore!

    - James.

  23. I knew something was different with the dialogue (which means I am not loosing my mind) :P

Amazing how a few words can make an already good thing even more so! I love Stacy, she's cool, her computer too, he has dramatics in his programming, classic!!

    Space pirates galore!! :P Yei!

I've got two pages penciled for Stacey's second issue.

    Teaser and cover coming soon!

  25. It's so not healthy for me to know that...I start obsesing, daydreaming of good things to come, thinking what she'll do? Are the pirates hot? How many? Is she going to be able to use her hands? :P It really tickles my brain and I know for sure what you create it's gonna be ten times better than whatever I can imagine :)

  26. Ten times better? -- Yikes! talk about pressure! ;)

I'll give you a hint, the space pirates are not human but aliens... and not all of them are male.

Hope that won't affect your health too much. ;)

    - James.

  27. In the kingdom of super talented, where you come from, pressure is not a concept, because people like you are constantly evolving, your mind is wired differently to go beyond! I know your kind ;)
