Spooky! no.2 Cover Pencils

Drew this one yesterday under the influence of NyQuil. (battling a bad summer cold and an ear infection. Basically, I feel like shit... wasn't gonna let that stop me, though.)

What resulted is this "underdrawing" for the cover of Spooky! #2:

Once I'm a little more alert, I'll be better able to decide if I like it or not.

The lesson here might be: "Don't drowse and draw!" ;)

James I do believe that her breasts are swerving...lol.

No, Not at all...lol I really don't see anything at all wrong here...other than...nope none at all.

Tell me something my master...I know you do your starter-work in pencil...then you scan it..and it goes into ADOBE? Now do you ink the works before the cleanup or do you set the pencil to a value to look like ink and then start the color process?

I have found that Adobe is impossible to draw with in a quick way even though I have a tablet...but it is not one that has the screen built right in...It's kinda slicky..."you can imagine why"...and the stylus just doesn't flow across the board like lead on a piece of paper...that has resistance, and that is what I'm used to...in order to make a line...either straight "impossible to do" or a nice curve "also impossible to do" I have to actually outline the lines with the selection tool...thats why my toons look angeled most of the time.

I never could actually draw on the computer...I paint to be more precise.

Moving right along...I also have to comment on her costume...damn!

Either you know the style of clothes in your head or you check out the latest magazines...doesn't matter though, they tend to cum off with wear ...lol.

Yes sir, another three beer salute!!!

Mart,

I don't ink anymore, so my work is all pencils, which I enjoy a lot more. (Never cared much for inking and never felt like I was really good at it, anyway.)

After the clean pencils are finished, I scan the page into Photoshop and set the contrast at +50. That's it!

Then I duplicate the layer, set it to "multiply" (which will make your lines darker still) and I'm ready to apply color with a Wacom tablet.

I like to keep things simple.

I don't know how Brian Bolland does it, but I've never felt comfortable drawing in Adobe. I like the feel of the artboard. And, being old school, I doubt I'll ever stop drawing on paper. Penciling is too much fun.

On the other hand, coloring in Photoshop is something I could not do without. It makes it so much easier and you can fuck up 100 times and it doesn't matter. Gotta love that!

As for the woman's outfit, I guess I do try and keep up with fashion trends. It's all in the details, as they say. ;)

Thanks Mart!
- James.
