R.I.P. Gene Colan

Gene Colan, the highly talented artist responsible for one of my favorite horror comic books growing up - The Tomb of Dracula - passed away last night at the age of 84.  I've always loved his uniquely fluid and moody style as well as his unorthodox panel designs and page layouts.

He will be missed...

  1. Awww, maaan! That's a damn shame! I guess he was sick for a while. I'm gettin' old enough that a lot of the guys I grew up reading are dying off. Sniff!
This guy was freakin' brilliant. No one even vaguely like him.

  2. I know what you mean, Slid. Most of the comic book artists I admired growing up are gone now (Jack Kirby, Frank Robbins, Don Newton, Jim Aparo, Marshall Rogers, Dave Stevens, Jerry Grandenetti... to name a few.)

I agree, Colan's style was truly unique. I can't think of any other artist who had even a remotely similar style to Gene's.

  3. It's funny because I've never liked Colan's style but for me has drawn the Black Widow like he did.
